What to Expect in May

The Gallatin is usually not a good May venue. Runoff usually roils the Gallatin's many tributaries this month and can leave the mainstem muddy and unfishable. However, if the river is in shape, nymph fishing along the edges will probably be the best option. Team a big stonefly, such as a Kaufmanns Stonefly, Rubber Legs, or Rocky Nymph with a smaller nymph such as a Brassie, CDC Bubble Brassie, Copper John, Prince, or Pheasant Tail.
There can be some caddis hatches when the weather warms up, but warmer weather will bring snowmelt. And once the Gallatin blows, you can forget about it until it clears up. Anglers who stay above the Taylors Fork should have the fewest problems during this season.
See the Rivers in General report for more May fly fishing tips.
