What to Expect in April

How to use this section.

The East Lewis re-opens for steelhead fishing on April 16. A few spring steelhead will enter the river this month. Your chances of hooking one of these torpedos are not high, but if one grabs your fly you will not soon forget the experience.

Water temperatures will not be warm, so you'll probably still need a sink-tip line. Black and purple flies, such as a Marabou or Steelhead Bunny, are good choices; if those are not working, switch to hot pink or orange and see if that stirs up the fish. This river clears quickly after a rain, so if a storm blows in, hit the river soon afterwards.
