Look for fish around gravel bars and walking-pace water that is 2-5 feet deep between Sultan and Monroe. A boat helps because you can reach prime spots and not be surrounded by gear anglers. Bank-bound fishers can find good spots along Ben Howard Road, which runs along the south side of the river between Monroe and Sultan.
When the river is running clear, stick with small, drab patterns. A Kaufmanns Stonefly or Cased Caddis bounced along the bottom is a good option, too; use indicator tactics for those flies. If the river has some color, use larger, brighter flies, such as Marabous, Polar Shrimps, or an orange General Practitioner presented with traditional tactics. The more murky it gets, the larger and darker the fly.
Like other Puget Sound steelhead rivers, the Skykomish has often been closed at this time of year due to poor steelhead returns. So check with a local source or WDFW before planning a trip.
