What to Expect in September
What usually happens. Best way to use this section.
Hatches divided by half-month. Super Major Minor Slight None

Terrestrials--hoppers, beetles, ants--remain a good choice early in the month. Try size 12 tan hopper patterns. Cooler weather will knock back the terrestrials. Windy days will be best for hopper fishing.
Tricos can be expected in the early morning early in September, but cool weather will soon end the hatch; it's nearly done now.
Expect mahogany duns to begin their hatch season soon, but they can be an uncertain hatch here. Callibaetis continue to pop up in the quiet sloughs and backwaters. The Callibaetis will soon depart for the season.
Blue-winged olives will hatch in the mornings, too; they will continue all month, gathering steam as the weather cools down. For most of September, blue-winged olives will dominate the scene.
In the Conservancy water, you need specialty spring-creek patterns. In my experience, non-locals should visit a local shop such as Lost River Outfitters or Silver Creek Outfitters and ask them what's working best at the time. Then buy your flies there.
See the Rivers in General section for more September fly fishing tips.
