As on the Bitterroot, doublebead stonefly nymphs, San Juan Worms, and Princes are nymphs of choice; the doublebead will help get your fly on the bottom where it belongs. Look for midge hatches in slow glides on warmer days. Wait for days when the air temperature is 38 degrees or more.

The Clark Fork has more water than other Missoula-area rivers, so you'll have to work a little harder to find trout. However, the Clark Fork offers the best winter midge fishing in the area IF you know where to find the fish.

See the Rivers in General report for additional winter fly fishing tactics.
