What to Expect in February

What usually happens. Best way to use this section.

Late February and March are often prime times on the Queets as wild steelhead return. A road blow-out in 2005, and again in 2006, has blocked the Queets access road above Matheny Creek. The Forest Service is working on an alternate route. You can read about it at http://www.nps.gov/olym/parknews/interim-access-route-proposed-for-queets-valley.htm.

Like the Hoh, the Queets is subject to run-off problems after a storm. However, If the river is running low and clear you should stick to small flies in pink or orange, and drop your tippet size; fluorocarbon leader will help, too. When the river is off-color, which it usually is, try large dark patterns such as black General Practitioners. With in-between clarity, use bright Marabou patterns or Egg Sucking Leeches. Use a type 3 or type 6 sink tip line and traditional tactics.
