Uses

At first glance, the CDC Superfly and its variation the Superfly look like something tied by an eight-year-old with excess enthusiasm at the vise. Once you understand the fly, however, it starts to look pretty clever, for this is a fly that is intended for the scissors once you're on the stream: the excess parts are clipped away when you see (or suspect) what's going on. One (or more)

wings can be whacked off depending on whether trout are taking emergers, duns, or spinners. Same story for the tails.

 
Due to the bulk of the extra elements, the CDC Superfly is effective only for larger patterns. For color options, see Westfly's entomology pages.

 
The advantage of this fly is that you don't have to fill as many bins in your fly box. Just remember the scissors.

 
Jeff Morgan, the originator, says that while the CDC Superfly was designed as an adaptable mayfly imitation, you can actually leave all the parts intact and use it as an attractor pattern in rough water.

How to Fish

Do NOT dress the CDC portions of the fly with floatant! Use standard dry fly presentations.

Tying Instructions

1. Debarb hook, place in vise, start thread.

 
2. Tie in Antron tail. Trim to length.

 
3. Tie in dun Microfibbets, split.

 
4. Tie in goose biot. Wrap forward.

 
5. Tie in spinner wings. Trim to length.

 
6. Tie in CDC upwing.

 
7. Tie in hackle.

 
8. Dub thorax.

 
9. Wrap hackle carefully so as to not trap the wings.

 
10. Whipfinish and trim.
