Floating Snail

Hook: Dai Riki 300, size 12

Thread: Olive Kevlar 3/0

Shell: Spun olive or brown deer hair

Foot: Brown foam

Uses

Imitates a snail floating on the surface of the water. Why would a snail do that? Because wave action or some other disturbance dislodged it from the bottom.

Trout can be selective on snails when there are large numbers of them floating on the surface of a lake or river. For more on this subject, see the article Snails

How to Fish

When a pattern is composed of a single material, it is difficult to make it float properly. If you squeeze a little water into the deer hair shell and grease up the foam, the foam will lie in the surface film and the shell will hang down. Use the chuck-and-sit presentation. (Be sure to fish this pattern static with as little movement as possible.)

Tying Instructions

1. De-barb hook, place hook in vise, and start thread.

2. Spin olive deer hair and clip to a rough spherical shape.

3. Whipfinish and cement head.

4. Cut foam "foot" to shape and superglue to deer hair.
