Little Yellow Stonefly

Created by Polly Rosborough

HOOK: TMC 5212, sizes 10-12

THREAD: Yellow

TAIL: Red goose quill

BODY: Yellow or chartreuse floss

WING: Red fox squirrel tail

HACKLE: Ginger

Uses

Sometimes trout want their yellow stones as nymphs. And some species of yellow stoneflies emerge in the water, and when they do, trout definetely prefer their meals subsurface. And sometimes the female adults are laying their eggs on the water and trout want a good ol' bushy surface fly. This pattern is for the latter case.

The red tail represents the egg sac of the gravid female. It is optional, but improves the fly if you fish it during an egg-laying flight.

How to Fish

Dress the fly with floatant and use standard dry fly presentations near the river bank.
