Uses

This dressing is the Royal Wulff, a variation of the famous Royal Coachman. While it imitates nothing, it can catch trout when they aren't feeling selective and picky. If you use it during a hatch, when trout are feeding selectively on duns, you will probably become very frustrated.

Wulff-style flies are attractor patterns that are designed for rough water. They are too highly-dressed to work well on slow, clear water or when trout are feeding selectively. But when you're casting to eager trout in fast, riffly water-- a situation where the fish want a floating fly, but where they don't have too long to look at it--Wulff patterns make good sense.

Variations

The most common variations are the Gray Wulff (gray body, blue-dun hackle) and White Wulff (white body and tail, badger hackle).

How to Fish

Dress the fly with floatant and use standard dry fly presentations.
