Equivalant Hooks for Fly Tying

Truth be told, hooks are rarely "equivalent" because there are no standards in the hook manufacturing industry. One company's size 10 is another's size 12; bends are different; wire weights are not the same. But the table below gives a rough idea of what hooks may be substituted for those listed in fly tying recipes. The table is not a complete list of all hooks that are available, but it covers most of the bases and the commonly-available hooks.

Hooks are grouped by type--"Dry," "Salmon/Steelhead," etc.--then by wire size, shank length, and eye. Wire size runs from 4XF (4X Fine) through standard (S) to 2XH (2X Heavy). Shank length ranges from 7XS (7X Short) to 6XL (6X Long). Eyes are S (straight), TD (turned down), and TU (turned up). Thus "Dry: S,1XL, TD" means the hook has standard wire size, 1X long shank, and a turned down eye.
