Reverse Spider

Created by Mike Kinney

HOOK: Saltwater 1X Heavy, Standard length, Straight eye. E.g., TMC 800S or equivalent. Size 4-8

THREAD: Black 6/0

TAIL: Mallard flank

WING: Mallard flank tied facing forward, NOT swept back over the body.

BODY: Black chenille

Uses

A traditional fly for sea-run cutthroat in saltwater and in estuaries. Also useful in rivers.

Variations

Body color can be varied. Other good colors are yellow and red.

How to Fish

Use short strips when retrieving. Let the fly settle and drop a little after each strip. When the fly is retrieved, the soft mallard flank wing will fold back over the fly, then come forward when you pause. This large, undulating motion is the key to the fly's success.
