Dubbed Sculpin

HOOK: Dai Riki 700, size 2-8 RIBBING: Fine gold wire BODY: Brown sparkle dubbing ribed with black and brown ostrich herl THROAT: Red marabou, dubbed or wrapped WING: Brown dyed grizzly feather, matuka style PECTORAL FINS: Hen mallard back feather (this can be hard to find; you may have to shoot your own duck or look for roadkill) HEAD: Dark brown and black deer hair, spun and clipped

Uses

Imitates a sculpin. This version uses deer hair dubbing for more realistic mottling. See Deer Hair Dubbing--The Sequel.

How to Fish

Use a sink-tip or full sinking line and a count-down-and-retrieve or slow retrieve presentation. Sometimes make the fly move with quick darts: give it a short fast strip, then let it sit, then strip again; and so on. The main thing is to be at the right depth (it will vary) and to make the fly move like it is alive.

Tying Instructions

1. De-barb hook and insert in vise. Start thread

 
2. Tie in gold wire ribbing and ostrich herl.

 
3. Dub body.

 
4. Wrap ostrich herl over body. You may have to tie in more ostrich halfway through on bigger flies.

 
5. Dub or wrap marabou at throat.

 
6. Tie in paired dyed grizzly feathers.

 
7. Rib golde wire through the grizzly feathers.

 
8. Tie in pectoral fins on sides of fly

 
9. Mix deer hari and dub it on. It may be easier to make a base of a wrap or two of chinille so that you don't have to dub as much.

 
10. Trim head to reasonable neatness. Whip finish and trim thread.
