Uses

Imitates the nymphs of the salmonfly (Pteronarcys californica). This pattern is simpler than many stonefly nymphs.

This fly must be fished on the bottom. Period. So weight it heavily under the body and use the beadhead. For more information about this fly, see the article Last-Minute Stones

How to Fish

Dead drift on the bottom with an indicator or tight line presentation. The best areas are bouldery sections, riffles, and just below riffles. If you find a moderatre drop-off just below a riffle, consider yourself blessed.

Tying Instructions

1. Debarb hook. Slide bead onto head. Place in vise and start thread.

 
2. Tie in tails.

 
3. Tie in foam for abdomen. Wrap abdomen.

 
4. Tie on V-cut black Body Stretch for 1st wingcase.

 
5. Tie on black Estaz. Make one wrap of Estaz.

 
6. Pull over Body Stretch for second wingcase, tie down.

 
7. Tie in rubber legs on each side.

 
8. Sweep legs back with wrap of Estaz.

 
9. Pull over Body Stretch for third wingcase, tie down.

 
10. Tie on legs so that two stick forward for antennae and the other two stick out to the sides.

 
11. Dub throat.

 
12. Whip-finish and cement head.
