Shavers Sowbug


HOOK: Dai Riki 300, size 12-14

THREAD: Gray or white

UNDERBODY: 6-7 wraps of .20 lead wire. Flatten, then coat with superglue

BODY: White or light gray sparkle dubbing or Antron

BACK: Gray Body Stretch

RIBBING: 4X clear monoflilament

  Shavers Sow Bug

Uses

Sowbugs (Isopoda) often live in similar habitat to scuds. They are similar in appearance, except they are flattened from top to bottom, with the legs sticking out the sides. For more, see the article Aquatic Sowbugs.

How to Fish

Dead drift near the bottom using indicator, or tight line tactics.

Tying Instructions

1. Debarb hook, place in vise.


 
2. Wrap lead wire, flatten with a pliers, superglue, and allow 10-15 minutes to dry.


 
3. Replace fly in vise, start thread.


 
4. Tie in shellback material and ribbing.


 
5. Dub body.


 
6. Pull shellback over dubbing and tie down.


 
7. Rib with monofilament


 
8. Whipfinish and trim.


 
9. Pluck out legs with dubbing needle.
