Where ya fish'n this weekend?
|
|
Because so many of you like the company of strangers, you're probably headed to The D Others may be going somewhere else. I can't decide if I'm going trout fishing at Olalla Lake or bass fishing at a local farm... guess I'll figure it out fersure tomorrow morn. Oh, if you do end up going to Olalla and see a guy wearing a fedora and floating around in a blue SuperCat, please stay away from my area... Unlike some fly anglers, I hate crowds I kid, I kid. If you are at Olalla and see me on the lake, give me a shout and we'll compare notes on what is and isn't working to catch trout. So... where ya headed this weekend?

I was hoping to fish the McKenzie or MF Willamette this weekend, but car troubles put an end to that hope. I guess I'll have to "settle" for a trip the Metolius next week.

Probably end up near the pelletheads at the eagle exhibit at the zoo...although it might be fun to tangle with some of those Pacu at the Amazon Rainforest exhibit.

Looks like my plans are about like fishbum's. Laurence or D depending on wind conditions. I hit Laurence yesterday and got a buttkicking rowing workout while chasing pelletheads. Sore muscles today reminded me of how fat and out of shape I am...

Nothing wrong with pellet heads. Most of the fisheries are planted. At Olalla they range from 8-inches to 20-inches so you never know what you're going to get. Besides, we pay for them, we may as well catch the guys when there's no wild trout in the fishery.

Staying home this weekend because I just got back from 2 days of epic fishing in Eastern Oregon. I sure will be interested in hearing how Olalla Lake is. Planning on a trip up there again this summer, I hope. Good luck, Gene.
This is the exact reason one should never go on a computer after 2 epic days of Browns and a long drive home.....I want to go to Olallie Lake....my bad...carry on
Everyone have a great weekend wherever you are!

Since I don't have to fish on the weekends I leave the waters for those that need to. I have fishing, golfing or grandkids six days of the week. Saturdays are to analyze stock market results and plan the actions for the next week. Given the Greek elections and the perception by market traders that everything is going to turn out great and the ECB and Fed will come to the rescue if necessary, Next week could have big moves in either direction and being prepared is key. Also, Saturdays are for all the things that need to be done around home.
Sundays are always golf practice and play to prepare for the next weeks tournament (Monday is at Willamette Valley in Canby). Just noticed that Browns have been stocked in my favorite WA lake so must squeze in a trip there next week before going to East Lake.
Was planning to do weekend fishing next weekend at the East Lake rondi but there certainly doesn't seem to be much interest by the Westfly community so maybe not.

Brandon, if we're talking about the same Olalla (the one close to Toledo) the hot fly we've been using is a size 8, insect green WB with grizz hackle. Black or brown WBs in the same size with gizz hackle have also worked. In the past, olive instead of insect green has been the ticket but this year they like the lighter color of green. My fishing buddies were there on Tuesday and one of them caught a (measured) 21-inch planter with the insect green WB using a full fast sinking line and a long leader. Regardless, I've decided to try my new bass patterns today at a farm lake. I've caught 5 lb bass there in the past and am keen to see if I can fool a few others.

I'm nursing (and scratching) a swollen arm today after a trip to the clackamas yesterday. Im not sure what the heck this is but it started out about the size of a bee sting and progressed to the size of a golf ball, then the size of a baseball by the afternoon. Today the swelling is down in terms of puffing up but its spread out through my forearm. Bad reaction to something i touched while bush whacking or something that bit me. Should have taken the boat...
Found a neat intruder style fly in the river and a pink fatfish lure. Father in law had one tug on a jig and bobber I set up for him.
Facing a very long car ride back "home" later today unfortunately. No more fishing this weekend.
Go get em folks...

Well that was danged disappointing! Guess I should have spent the gas money and went to Olalla. I didn't catch a single bass. I didn't even get a hit from a bass... and I know they are there because there is a ton of bass fry in the shallows.
The saving grace is I caught a plethora of bluegill... I mean a gill on every cast sort of thing. But I wasn't primarily fishing for the gills so they ended up as my backup plan.
Bummer. All those bass patterns I've been making and not one of them worked to fool a bass. Guess I'll have to start going in the evenings when the LMB are more apt to take a popper.
However, I must say, for their size, a bluegill puts up a hell of a fight.
