Fishing around Bend
|
|
Wife is going to Bend and i'm tagging along for the weekend. Assuming I have time to hit the Deschutes can a local provide some advice on where to go for a few hours of fishing?
Thanks

Not a local but you should negotiate more than a few hours. Anywhere along the D in there will have fish. Pull streamers for the bigger guys.

I am not a local (but I hope to be one soon), but I spent a week in Bend last year scouting for when we move there. The Crooked would be the best bet for catching fish (20 minutes east of Bend). The Metolius might be the nicest river you will ever get to fish, but you might come away empty handed (20 minutes north west of Bend), or finally, you could go up past Mount Bachelor and fish the upper Deschutes for Brook trout, or some great flat water fishing at Lake Hosmer or the Lava lakes.
Any one of those options I think you will find very rewarding, and all an easy drive from town.
Good luck,
cheers

Tumalo State park has good bank access and is just north of Bend on hwy 20. 2ND That and it's only 5 minutes away from town. If your looking for something right in town you can always fish right below Colorado Street bridge in Mckay Park.

If you're here over the weekend, it's going to be warm, so the river will be crowded with swimmers and "floaters" during the day. I like places like Sawyer and Tumalo Parks, but only early or late, when the crowds are gone. You can find undisturbed fish if you hike, though.
Oh, and the Metolius and Crooked are not 20 minutes from town, more like 45.

Are the flows still up and water temps low on the D?

Temperatures seem a little cooler than normal, but certainly aren't cold so that's probably a good thing. Flows depend on where you're asking about. It's irrigation season so the flows are high above town, but that's normal. Below town they're low, but they keep changing the flow up and down which isn't normal. Right now the flows below town are what I consider high for Summer fishing, almost double what they were this time last week. They've been doing that almost every week since irrigation started in April. It's made my local fishing very difficult so far this season.

Erine,
Peoto is right.... the flows below town ( tumalo st. park ) do vary depending on how warm it gets, if it's going to rain, how much water is in Wickiup. Which is a lot. If you head towards the upper you will need bug spray. The mosquito are pretty thick this year.
Dragin'fly... lol . Took me a min....
You could also fish Tumalo Creek but there isn't much size to the fish up there.

The snakes and tics are pretty bad on the upper river too.
