Ten Tips for Writers
- To write well, read well. You will subconsciously imitate what you read, so don't read junk!
- Understand the medium. The internet is not print; the two media have separate demands, styles, and readerships. The approach to an internet article is completely different than for a magazine piece.
- Do it a lot. Practice writing like you'd practice a sport. The more you do it, the better you get.
- Give it time. Be patient with yourself.
- Beware of cliches. There are cliches of style as well as phrases.
- Divide and conquer. Split your project into small steps, then tackle each step one-at-a-time.
- Pay close attention to your lead. Most beginners bury the lead in the third or fourth paragraph.
- Understand your audience. What do they already know? What do they want to know?
- Punctuation is important!
- Commence--the rest is easy
