Steelhead

► August is usually not the best month to pursue Sandy River steelhead because hot weather melts the glaciers on Mt. Hood and sends loads of silt down the river, making fishing difficult. On the other hand, a spell of cool weather could slow the rate of glacial meltdown and make the Sandy worth a few casts.

► If you come, use traditional tactics and standard summer steelhead swinging flies.

► If the river is fishable but still somewhat silty, you'll probably find steelhead in slightly slower water than usual and along the edges. That's how they reduce the amount of silt that passes through their gills. Use large, dark flies to counteract the murky water.
